Penguins Assign Smith and Ouellet to Nailers

WHEELING, WV – The Wheeling Nailers announce today that defenseman Matt Smith and forward Michel Ouellet have been assigned to the team from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. The Penguins traded forward Brendan Walsh to the San Antonio Rampage for Smith.

Smith, 25, is a 6'6" native of Toronto, ONT and is in his fifth full season of professional hockey. He began his professional career at the end of the 1997-98 season when he appeared in four games for the IceCats. He also played part of the 1998-99 and 1999-00 seasons for the Peoria Rivermen of the East Coast Hockey League. The last two seasons Smith has played professionally in Finland for Ilves Tampere. Smith returned to North America for the 2002-03 season and played two games for the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League and seven games for the Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League.

Ouellet joins the Nailers for the second time this season, having played seven games from October 25 November 3. In those games he scored four points on three goals and one assist. Two of his goals were power play goals and he did not have any penalty minutes. Ouellet has appeared in three games this season for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and has one assist.

With Smith and Ouellet, the Nailers now have 20 players on their roster, eight defensemen, ten forwards and two goalies. Smith will be with the Nailers this weekend when the team travels to Toledo on Friday and to Dayton on Saturday.

The next Nailers home game is Thursday, November 28, Thanksgiving night against the Johnstown Chiefs at 7:00p.m. The first 1,500 fans age 14 and younger will receive a school binder courtesy of The Intelligencer and News Register.
