Baton Rouge Kingfish News Release

After a three-year pro career and a Kelly Cup under his belt, Kingfish forward Trevor Wasyluk announced his retirement today.

The Medicine Hat, Alberta, native accepted a job in Canada as a second conductor with a major Canadian railway company.

"I applied to a couple of different places over the summer," said Wasyluk, "and I promised myself that if an opportunity like this came along for me to have a career after hockey, I would seriously consider the offer."

Wasyluk joined the Kingfish last year in December and finished the season with 28 points. He closed out the season with 10 points in 12 games.

"I really enjoyed my stay in Baton Rogue," said Wasyluk. "but I came here with two bad knees it became tougher and tougher to get out of bed every morning and come to work."

Through 16 games this season, Wasyluk picked up 3 goals and 6 assists for 9 points on the season.

"I was getting frustrated with my play," said Wasyluk, "I would have a really good game and then the next game I wouldn't play up to my expectations."

Drafted in the 2nd round of the 1996 NHL entry draft by the Hartford Whalers with the 34th overall pick, Wasyluk began his pro carrer in the American Hockey League. During the 1999-00 season, Wasyluk helped guide the Peoria Rivermen to a Kelly Cup Championship.

"It's a great opportunity for me to have a career after hockey," said Wasyluk. "I had an opportunity to experience it first hand during this past summer and I really enjoyed it."
