Patterson, Glads Hold off Late Steelheads Comeback

Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID - Kent Patterson made 31 saves, including some big one's in the final minutes, to hold off the Idaho Steelheads (4-5-2) at CenturyLink Arena and push the Atlanta Gladiators (6-2-1) to their fifth straight road win, 3-1.

Cole Martin scored the Steelheads' only goal of the contest on the power play, with the Steelheads trailing 2-0. At 12:46 of the third period, Martin and McMillan played give-and-go of the left-wing wall, with Martin drifting to the middle of the ice to unload a slap shot through a Taylor Peters screen and behind Patterson.

Patterson wouldn't allow another one by him, with the Steelheads pressing furiously in the final minutes and out-shooting Atlanta 11-6 in the period. Patterson held the fort until Eric Neiley's empty-netter at 19:48 put the game away.

The Gladiators opened the scoring with a power play goal at 15:29 of the first, when Max Everson's drive from the top of the left circle zipped past Idaho's Philippe Desrosiers with Mike Merrifield cutting right across the top of the crease. Despite the Steelheads out-shooting the Galdiators 16-5 in the second period, it was Atlanta again scoring the only goal when the forecheck behind the Steelheads' net from Nathan Condon and Justin Buzzeo freed the puck in front for Brock Higgs to hit an open net.

Higgs had a strong series for Atlanta, scoring in each game and setting up the overtime winner on Friday night.

The Steelheads had the opportunity to come back, thanks to outstanding penalty killing once again. With 1:56 to go in the third period, the Steelheads found themselves down for a full 2-minute 5-on-3 disadvantage, a theme this week. In the midst of that kill, defenseman Andrew Panzarella took another penalty, putting the Steelheads short-handed for a full four minutes overlapping the second and third period.

They killed off the 5-on-3 and the Panzarella minor, thanks in large part to several key shot-blocks by Corbin Baldwin. The kill gave the Steelheads offensive momentum for the duration of the period, but not enough.

The Steelheads are now 1-3-2 at CenturyLink Arena, with their last win at home on opening night against the Rapid City Rush. They now head out for a nine-game road-trip, with stops against the Orlando Solar Bears, the Florida Everblades, the Colorado Eagles, and the Rapid City Rush.

Saturday night was Military Appreciation Night at CenturyLink Arena. The St. Luke's Military Jersey auction raised $15,200, with all proceeds donated to St. Luke's Rehabilitation to fund exercise and wellness programs for military veterans.
