Kalamazoo Wings News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI - Led by Kyle Thomas' three-point night, and a 32-save performance from Pat Nagle, the Fort Wayne Komets defeated the Kalamazoo Wings, 5-2, at Wings Event Center on Sunday afternoon.
While killing off an Alex Mallet penalty, the Wings found themselves in a 1-0 hole for the third straight game. Cycling the puck around the boards, Brock Montgomery found Mike Embach who wristed a shot from just inside the right faceoff dot, and found space between the glove and leg pad of Joel Martin.
Carrying the momentum from their first goal, the Komets pushed their lead two-goals with Thomas' first tally of the night. Executing a perfect stretch pass, Jordon Southorn lifted a puck from deep in his own zone to the tape of Thomas, who was streaking through the neutral zone, and buried a backhander over the glove of Martin.
In the dying seconds of the second frame, Fort Wayne extended their lead to 3-0, with Thomas notching his second of the night. Skating into Kalamazoo's defensive zone, Thomas walked down the slot uncontested and fired a shot over the blocker of Martin.
Adding insult to injury, the Komets added another marker midway through the final stanza. Southorn took a pass from Montgomery while skating into the offensive zone, dashed around the Kalamazoo defense, and roofed the puck on a backhander to push their lead to 4-0.
Looking for something to build on moving forward, the Wings broke the shutout bid for Nagle with a one-timer from the blue line off the tape of Charlie Vasaturo. Justin Kovacs picked up the loose puck from behind the Fort Wayne net and cycled the puck along the boards to the stick of Vasaturo who ripped in his second of the season.
The Wings continued to fight and were rewarded for their efforts just eleven-seconds later. Dane Fox lifted a shot on net which ricocheted off the blocker of Nagle. Colin Murray batted the puck down towards the goal line, and it was eventually slid in by the stick of Mallet. With the assist, Fox pushed his point streak to four games.
Ending any chance of a comeback, Fort Wayne added an empty net tally from Brett Perlini. Thomas added the lone assist on the marker, giving him three-points on the night.
Notes: Joel Martin stopped 26 of the 30 shots he faced. Dane Fox extended his point-streak to four-games with an assist tonight. With the loss, Kalamazoo's five-game unbeaten (in regulation) streak was ended.
