Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Admirals looked to extend their win streak to four games Sunday afternoon, but came up short after a 3-1 defeat on the road against the South Carolina Stingrays. Norfolk entered the afternoon having scored 13 goals in their last three games, but were held to only one by the Stingrays' defense.
Norfolk's newest addition, goaltender Nic Riopel, played in his 66th ECHL game, and made his first start with the Admirals between the pipes. South Carolina struck first when Bobby Shea weaved through the defense and slid one past Riopel on an assist from Joe Devin and David Pacan with 1:12 left in the first.
After a slow start to the second period, a wrap around pass from Colin Mulvey across the crease found Andrew Rowe, who beat Riopel on the right side of goal to give South Carolina a 2-0 advantage 11:26 into the second.
The Stingrays weren't done, as Stephen Vigier went five-hole on Riopel from an assist by Pacan that created an open transition opportunity at 15:55.
It wasn't until 13:17 of the final period when the Admirals lit the lamp. Skating along the goal line, Charles-Olivier Roussel dumped a pass towards the net to Connor Rankin, who then sent it to Marco Roy at the top of the South Carolina crease. Roy one-timed his first professional goal past Vitek Vanecek to narrow the margin to 3-1.
After Riopel was pulled for an extra attacker late in the third, the Admirals weren't able to find an answer as Norfolk fell, 3-1.
Riopel stopped 31 of 34 shots-on-goal, while Vanecek saved 17 of the 18 shots sent his way. Norfolk's lone goal came on one of their two power-play opportunities, while they held South Carolina scoreless on six man advantages.
The Admirals won two-out-of-three games in this weekend's three-game series, and look to even their record this Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. when they take on the Elmira Jackals at Scope Arena.
Three Stars:
1. SC - 17 Bobby Shea
2. SC - 9 Andrew Rowe
3. SC - 61 David Pacan
