THEY SAID IT
"These were really important points for us going into a weekend where there is going to be lots of hockey, and teams we need to be able to compete with, so it was a good start to that. We had some good opportunities in the first period, but didn't come up with much, but we hung in there. We kept plugging along and our third period was pretty good." - Regina Pats Assistant Coach Ken Schneider
FINAL: Pats 5, Hitmen 4
THE GOALS
First Period
1-0 Htimen at 5:54 - Matteo Danis (2), assisted by Ben Kindel & Carter Yakemchuk (PP) // Kindel's shot is stopped by Pyne but the rebound went to Danis who took a couple of attempts at it and he was able to put it past Pyne to give the Hitmen a 1-0 lead.
1-1 Pats at 10:01 - Borya Valis (2), assisted by Sam Oremba & Tye Spencer // Spencer won a board battle behind the Hitmen goal, and he got the puck to Oremba who in turn found Valis out front. He put the puck past Buenaventura to even the contest at 1-1.
2-1 Hitmen at 16:30 - Carson Wetsch (1), assisted by Carter Yakemchuk // The Pats got caught on a bad line change and the Hitmen were able to capitalize as Wetsch got behind the defence and put the Hitmen in the lead at 2-1 late in the first period.
Second Period
3-1 Hitmen at 17:56 - Ethan Moore (2), assisted by London Hoilett & Aleksey Chichkin // A mad scramble in front of the Pats net led to a clearing attempt going off a Pats player to Moore who had a wide-open cage and he fired it home to give the Hitmen a two-goal lead at 3-1.
Third Period
3-2 Pats at 2:24 - Layton Feist (2), assisted by Zackary Shantz & Jaxsin Vaughan (PP) // Feist's long-range no-look shot somehow eluded Buenaventura to pull the Pats to within one on the powerplay at 3-2.
3-3 Pats at 4:02 - Tanner Howe (5), assisted by Braxton Whitehead // A Calgary defender tried to clear the puck and it caromed off Howe and somehow past the Hitmen netminder to get the Pats on even terms at 3-3.
4-3 Hitmen at 13:48 - Reese Hamilton (1), assisted by David Adaszynski & Keets Fawcett // Hamilton's shot from the point somehow missed bodies and eluded Pyne to give the Hitmen a 4-3 lead.
4-4 Pats at 14:28 - Zackary Shantz (2), assisted by Matteo Michels // Michels fed a pass to Shantz in front of the Hitmen net and he chipped it toward the Hitmen goal and at first it did not look like he scored but after a video review it was deemed that the puck crossed the line to tie it up at 4-4.
5-4 Pats at 14:54 - Braxton Whitehead (3), assisted by Tanner Howe & Dru Mushumanski // Mushumanski's shot is stopped and after Howe took an attempt at it, Whitehead connected to give the Pats a 5-4 lead.
