
Hurricanes Add Cairns; Waive Astashevich

LETHBRIDGE, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club announced Wednesday they have added 2006-born forward Cole Cairns to their roster while also waiving 2004-born import forward Anton Astashevich.
Cairns, 17, was originally selected in the fourth-round (81st overall) in 2021 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft by the Portland Winterhawks. The Winnipeg, MB, product appeared in three games last season with the Winterhawks going pointless with a minus-1 rating. In 2022-2023, Cairns recorded 16 points (5g-11a) with 26 penalty minutes with the RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg U18 team.
The 5'9, 145-pound forward had 19 points (7g-12a) and 26 penalty minutes in 2021-2022 with the Winnipeg Bruins U18 AAA team while going pointless in three post-season games. Cairns has appeared in two regular season games this season with the Steinbach Pistons of the Manitoba Junior-A Hockey League this season. He will join the Hurricanes roster.
Additionally, the Hurricanes have waived 19-year-old import Anton Astashevich. The Belarus-born forward appeared in 67 regular season games over parts of two seasons with the Hurricanes totaling 23 points (8g-15a) with 42 penalty minutes while also collecting two points (1g-1a) in four post-season games.
