
Panthers Assign Rookie D-Man to Blades

ESTERO, FL - Florida Everblades President and General Manager Craig Brush along with Head Coach Gerry Fleming announced today that rookie defenseman Peter Aston has been assigned to the club by the Florida Panthers from the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.
Aston joins the Everblades after playing in 56 games with Amerks where he registered 13 points (3g, 10a) and 35 penalty minutes. The Toronto, Ontario native's 13 points and 10 assists were both third highest among Rochester defenseman.
A fifth round draft pick by the Panthers in 2006, Aston made his professional debut in 2006-07 playing in 21 games with Assat Pori of the Finnish SM-Liiga. The 22-year-old tallied three points (2g, 1a) in his 21 games in Finland before returning to North American to finish his four-year junior career in the Ontario Hockey League. Aston finished 2006-07 by skating in 41 regular season games with the Oshawa Generals where he scored eight goals and added 24 assists. He then helped the Generals reach the OHL Conference Finals by chipping in eight points (1g, 7a) in nine playoff games.
The 6-foot-1, 205 pound blue-liner put together his best junior season in 2005-06 when he split time between the Peterborough Petes and the Windsor Spitfires. Aston began the season by notching 19 points in 16 games with Peterborough before being traded to Windsor where he finished the campaign with 33 points in 49 games.
Overall during his four-year junior career Aston recorded 104 points (26g, 78a) and 102 penalty minutes in 194 games. Also during his junior career Aston was a teammate of current Everblades goaltender David Shantz in Peterborough during the 2005-06 season.
In a separate move today, the Everblades released forward Paul Caponigri from his contract. The 28-year-old skated in 16 games with the Everblades this season recording two assists. The Oak Park, Illinios native was acquired by the Everblades in a November trade with the Mississippi Sea Wolves.
