Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - The Elmira Jackals, proud member of the ECHL, announced today they have signed Elmira College defenseman Russell Smith and Cornell University forward Topher Scott. Both players are expected to make their professional debuts tomorrow night when the Jackals host the Trenton Devils (7:05 p.m. - First Arena).
Smith, a 6'4", 225-pound native of Annapolis, Maryland, was Elmira College's third leading scorer this season with 33 points on the strength of six goals and 27 assists. His assist total led all Elmira College defensemen and was tied for 15th in the nation among Division III blueliners.
He appeared in 92 career games with the Soaring Eagles, scoring 14 goals with 47 assists for 61 points. Smith progressively improved his scoring in each season with his 33-point senior campaign eclipsing his first three seasons combined (28 points). Appearing in the NCAA national semifinals last weekend, Smith was also a member of the 2005-2006 squad that won the ECAC West post-season tournament and advanced to the NCAA national semifinals.
Scott, 22, completed his collegiate career with Cornell University last weekend at the ECAC Championships in Albany, New York. Durable despite his diminutive stature (5'6", 160 pounds), the Buffalo Grove, Illinois native did not miss a single game in his career with the Big Red. Appearing in 137 games, Scott posted 25 goals and 82 assists for 107 points during his stay in Ithaca.
Never finishing lower than fourth in team scoring with Cornell, Scott's 30 points led the 2006-2007 club and he led or tied for the team lead in assists in all but his freshman campaign. Scott was a member of the 2004-2005 Ivy League and ECAC (Regular Season and Tournament) champions that advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
