Brampton Beast News Release

KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN - Brampton Beast forward David Pacan picked up his league-leading 33rd tally of the season and added a pair of assists but the Kalamazoo Wings fought off a late third period charge to edge the Beast 5-4 at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo on Friday night.

Brandon Marino did his part with a three-assist night for Brampton who failed to record a point for the first time in their last eight games.

The game started well for the Beast as Chris Auger deflected a perfect centering pass from Pacan beyond the reach of K-Wings starter Nick Riopel for an early 1-0 lead at the 6:42 mark of the opening period.

The K-Wings remained composed and tied the game at 9:33 as Lane Scheidl cut in on a partial breakaway and beat Beast starting goaltender Zach Fucale to tie the game.

The back-and-forth opening period continued as the Beast pulled ahead again thanks to Jordan Henry, who sent a perfect low shot on goal through a crowd in front of Riopel. The show beat the netminder under the right pad, giving Henry his ninth goal of the year at 11:23.

Kalamazoo would net another to tie the game heading into the first intermission. Peter Schneider was the last to touch the puck as a point shot was deflected twice before reaching the goal, beating Fucale at 15:54.

The Beast outshot the Wings 15-10 in the first period.

Kalamazoo pushed back hard to start the second period and were rewarded for their efforts. Tyler Biggs scored the lone goal of the second period as he held onto the puck on a 2-on-1 rush and snapped a near-perfect shot past Fucale at 8:25, giving the Wings a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.

The intermission break worked wonders for Brampton as the team came out flying to start the final frame.

Pacan pounced on a feed from Marino in the slot and beat Riopel cleanly for his 33rd of the year just 19 seconds into the third period, tying the game at 3-3.

The middle of the third period was owned by the K-Wings as they pulled ahead by a pair of tallies. Schneider redirected in his second goal of the night at 4:04 and Justin Taylor found the top corner with a slap shot off the rush at 6:05, giving the hometown squad the first two-goal lead of the game.

The Beast fought back hard in the third period and outshot the Wings 16-8 but couldn't seem to solve Riopel, who made several notable saves down the stretch, including a cross-crease dive to rob David Vallorani of a sure goal.

With Fucale on the bench in favour of an extra skater in the dying minutes, the Beast pulled to within a goal to make things interesting. Marino set up Willie Corrin in the slot and the defenseman made no mistake in snapping home his sixth goal of the season with 43 seconds left to give the Beast a chance at completing the third-period comeback.

Riopel and the K-Wings shut the door in the final moments to skate away with the slim victory.

Notes: Three Stars of the Game: 3) Taylor (KAL) 2) Biggs (KAL) 1) Schneider (KAL). The Beast return to action on Sunday, March 5 as they head to the Huntington Center to take on the Toledo Walleye at 5:15pm.
