Jackals Can't Dig out of Early Hole in Norfolk

March 3, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

NORFOLK, VA -The Norfolk Admirals (21-30-4-0) scored three first period goals and used that surge to take down the Elmira Jackals (11-38-7-1), 5-2, Friday night at the Norfolk Scope.

Playing in their third game in four days, the Jackals fell behind in the first period to the Admirals, who hadn't played since last Saturday. Norfolk opened the scoring 11:20 into the first period on a shorthanded goal by Paul Rodrigues on a snap shot from the right circle. Three minutes later, Jack Lewis scored his first professional goal, in his first professional game, on a wraparound at 14:14.

Norfolk built a 3-0 lead later in the first period when T.J. Foster broke in on a breakaway against Jackals goalie Greg Dodds, who was making his professional debut. Foster slid the puck past Dodds and the Admirals grabbed a 3-0 lead at 17:51 of the opening period.

The Jackals regrouped in the first intermission and played a strong second period, getting themselves back in the game. They pulled within two on the strength of a power-play goal at 10:25 by rookie Sam Povorozniouk. He got the puck at the left circle and snapped a shot in under the crossbar for his 15th goal of the season.

Elmira struck again less than two minutes later on a loose puck rebound by Kenton Miller at 12:18. The puck was sent to the front and was directed to the net by Miller and the rebound was sitting in the crease, where he banged it in for his team-leading 21st goal. That got the Jackals to within 3-2 heading into the third period.

The Jackals comeback effort ran out of steam in the third period and the Admiral pulled away with two goals in the final frame. John Dunbar gave Norfolk a 4-2 lead 6:30 into the third on a power-play goal. The Admirals dumped the puck in and it sat in the slot, where Dunbar was first on the puck to fire it home. Later in the period, Ben Betker scored in transition with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle and the Admirals went up 5-2.

That score would hold up as the final as Norfolk won it's third straight game against the Jackals and Elmira winless road streak moved to 12 games.
