Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL today announced that defenseman P.J. Atherton has been named by the league as a PaySource USA ECHL Plus Performer of the Month for October. Atherton, Las Vegas center Chris Ferraro and South Carolina forward Travis Morin each played to a plus seven in October. Atherton and the Royals played seven games in October, and he played to even or better in each of those games. Atherton's most significant performance of that month may have been in the Royals' second game of the year (October 20), when he made his return to the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where Atherton played as a member of the Chiefs last season. In that 6-4 come-from-behind win for the Royals, Atherton not only scored two goals, but also played to a plus four. Atherton, a second year pro, currently leads the Royals' defensemen in scoring with three goals and five assists (eight points), which is tied for eighth amongst defensemen in the league. After thirteen games, Atherton, a sixth round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2002, is playing to a plus four. Atherton is the fourth Royal in the seven year history of the team to win the Plus Performer of the Month Award. The other three were: (i) Jeff Miles, November of 2004; (ii) Chris Barr, November of 2005; and (iii) Shawn Germain, December of 2006.

The Royals return to action this Friday night (7:05 pm) when the Trenton Devils make their first appearance at the Sovereign Center in Reading. The first 1500 fans this Friday will receive a camouflage hat courtesy of Medalist Performance Apparel and Mossy Oak. The game night broadcast will begin at 6:35 pm with the pre-game warm-up show and can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1240 am and on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. Streaming video is available on a pay per view basis through the B2 Networks.
