Providence Bruins News Release
Bridgeport, CT - The Providence Bruins fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in overtime Saturday night 5-4 at Webster Bank Arena. The P-Bruins got goals from Jan Kovar, Anton Blidh, Jakub Zboril and Ryan Donato while Zane McIntyre made his seventh start of the season in net.
The opening 20 minutes featured plenty of action and a historic milestone for a former P-Bruin. While on the power play 2:54 into the night, Chris Bourque picked up his 700th career AHL point with an assist on the opening goal. The tally came from Devon Toews at the right dot, as he beat McIntyre five-hole for his fourth goal of the season. Bourque became the 24th player in league history to reach the milestone and Bridgeport took an early 1-0 lead. Providence tied things up midway through the period with a power play goal of their own. Colby Cave fired a shot from the left dot into traffic with Ryan Fitzgerald jamming the net. He deflected the puck off of former P-Bruin Jeremy Smith, and the rebound went to Kovar on the right doorstep. He cleaned up the mess for his fourth goal of the season and Providence knotted things up 1-1 at 10:33. The Sound Tigers responded 1:25 later on a nice backhanded shot from Kieffer Bellows. Steve Bernier worked hard to get the puck to Bellows in the high slot, and Bellows got enough elevation on the puck to score his fifth goal of the season and give Bridgeport a 2-1 lead into the intermission
Bourque made it 3-1 Sound Tigers 4:28 into the second period off a good centering feed from Travis St. Denis. After Otto Koivula got him the puck behind the net, St. Denis found Bourque who snuck through the defense and he scored his fourth goal of the year. Blidh cut the deficit to one with an unassisted goal 1:11 later, using defense to create his third tally of the season. He stole the puck from a Bridgeport defender behind Smith's net, skated out to the right dot with space to shoot and sniped home a shot that made it 3-2. The Sound Tigers regained a two-goal edge at 15:25 by catching Providence in a line change. Jeff Kubiak had room to survey the ice along the half-boards and dropped off a pass to a streaking Kyle Burroughs. He blasted a one-timer from the point that beat McIntyre for his first goal of the season and Bridgeport led 4-2 after two periods.
Providence dominated the third period and came all the way back to tie things up behind a 16-8 shots advantage. The first goal came from Zboril 3:49 into the period, blasting a one-timer from the point that hit the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Zach Senyshyn, drafted two picks after Zboril by Boston, picked up the primary assist on the play that made it a 4-3 game. At 10:26, one of the newest Bruins tied the game with a snipe through traffic. From the top of the right circle, Donato wristed home his first AHL goal on a 5-on-3 power play to send the game to overtime 4-4. The P-Bruins had a five-minute major power play that was split between the third period and overtime, but could not convert on any of their chances. That would come back to haunt them, as 1:22 into overtime the Sound Tigers crashed the net, created traffic in front of McIntyre, and got a game-winning goal from St. Denis to take the game 5-4.
McIntyre stopped 20-25 shots while Smith stopped 23-27. Providence was 2-5 on the power play and 7-8 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins conclude their three-in-three weekend tomorrow at 3:05pm, welcoming back to the Dunk a Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins team they beat Friday night.
