Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - Trent Whitfield scored the game-winning goal in the shootout to propel the Providence Bruins past the Manchester Monarchs 2-1 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday afternoon. Nolan Schaefer blocked 41 shots, plus four in the shootout's six rounds, to earn the victory.
It took almost the entire first period, but Providence got on the board first. Each team was scoreless on its first two power plays, but the P-Bruins capitalized the third time around. Joe Colborne notched his 11thgoal of the season on a loose puck in front of Monarchs goalie Jeff Zatkoff at 18:35 of the first. Jamie Arniel and Max Sauve each had a hand in the scoring with an assist, after they each put a shot on net.
The second frame opened with a couple minutes of four-on-four hockey. Neither team took full advantage of the open ice, though Providence had a few good chances, including an Arniel breakaway that Zatkoff saved. Toward the close of the period, the P-Bruins had another chance in front, but the puck trickled away from Lane MacDermid.
In the third, Manchester ended its scoring drought with a power play goal. Brandon Kozun beat Schaefer with a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle after a pass from Thomas Hickey at 4:20 of the period. Neither team added another tally until the shootout, with the best chances coming for Providence toward the end of the third and in the overtime.
Providence scored both first and last in the shootout, with Zach Hamill's double deke wrister getting things started. After the goalies exchanged saves on the opposing teams' next attempts, Manchester struck for the tying goal as Oscar Moller beat Schaefer and put the pressure back on Providence.
Manchester took control of the shootout after Justin Azevedo snuck one past Schaefer to make it 2-1 Monarchs. In the fifth round, Sauve lit the lamp to tie the shootout at two. Viatcheslav Voynov came close to helping the Monarchs skate off with a win in the shootout, but Schaefer stopped him with a save.
In the first extra round of shooters, Trent Whitfield's wrist shot zipped past Zatkoff top shelf to give the P-Bruins a 3-2 lead. Corey Elkins could not find the back of the net on the shootout's final attempt, which gave the P-Bruins the victory.
Schaefer was the game's second star, earning his seventh win of the season as he made 41 saves. Zatkoff, the third star, fell to 10-11-3 after a 34-save effort. Providence ended the game 1-for-9 on the power play and 7-for-8 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins are next in action on Tuesday as they play their fourth game in five days, taking on Connecticut at 7 p.m. in Hartford. Providence returns to the Ocean State on Friday for Rhode Island Lottery Hat Night at 7:05 p.m. against Portland. The hats are free to the first 3,000 fans in attendance.
