Phantoms Extend Streak to 3 in 4-3 Shootout Loss

Glens Falls, NY- The Phantoms extended their point streak to three games but weren't able to get the win at home as they dropped a 4-3 shootout decision to the Hamilton Bulldogs Saturday night. Stefan Legein (4th), J.P. Testwuide (1st) and Eric Wellwood (10th) scored for the Phantoms but the Bulldogs overcame a two-goal deficit with under 7 minutes remaining in the third.
Adirondack is now 7-4-3 under Coach Joe Paterson and 9-4-3 in their last 16 games. The Phantoms have earned three out of a possible 4 points against division leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Hamilton.
In a fast moving opening period, Alexander Avtsin fed Ben Maxwell in the high slot to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. It was Maxwell's ninth of the year beating Phantoms goaltender Johan Backlund top shelf.
Backlund was strong in first period though stopping 13 of 14 Bulldog shots.
Adirondack would score three unanswered goals in the middle frame on their first four shots of the period. Stefan Legein on a breakaway pass from defenseman Kevin Marshall in the Phantoms zone tied the score at 1-1.
J.P. Testwuide would give the Phantoms their first lead of the night on his first goal of the season. J.P. re-directed a Cullen Eddy shot from the point sneaking one through the 5-hole of Bulldogs goaltender Robert Mayer to give Adirondack a 2-1 lead.
Less than two minutes later, Eric Wellwood extended the Phantoms lead to two as he backhanded a Mike Testwuide pass from the right circle past Mayer to score his second goal in his last two games.
After a few decent chances for the Phantoms to extend the lead in the third period, Hamilton struck with two goals in 1:27. Kyle Klubertanz scored his sixth goal of the year at the 13:39 mark and then Hunter Bishop tied the game at 3-3 on his second goal of the season.
In overtime, Hamilton outshot Adirondack 3-2 but both teams had their opportunities in the extra session.
Aaron Paluhaj and Dustin Boyd scored in the shootout for Hamilton to seal the game for the Bulldogs.
Phantoms goaltender Johan Backlund made 26 saves in regulation while Bulldogs goaltender Robert Mayer turned aside 21 Adirondack shots and all 4 in the shootout to earn his eighth win of the season.
Neither team had any power plays, as referee Jeff Smith did not call a penalty throughout the entire game.
The Phantoms will travel to Hamilton twice in the month of February including a game at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Feb.25.
Adirondack travels to Hershey for their final time this season to conclude their 3-game weekend.
