Bears Bash Adirondack 5-1 Sunday

HERSHEY capped off a terrific home weekend Sunday with a 5-1 win over the Adirondack Phantoms. The win gave the BEARS three wins in as many nights at Giant Center, outscoring the opposition in that span 18-5.

The teams slogged their way through a scoreless first period, with the BEARS putting nine shots on goal against Adirondack goaltender Michael Leighton. Dany Sabourin stopped the five that came his way, including a short-handed breakaway attempt by Eric Wellwood.

HERSHEY opened up the floodgates in the second period, scoring three times to take a 3-0 lead into second intermission. Francois Bouchard started the scoring with his second goal in three games at the 2:37 mark, which was quickly followed by Patrick Wellar's second goal in three nights at the 4:48 mark. Andrew Gordon was up next, scoring his 20th goal of the season on a shot low to the ice past Leighton at 12:40. The BEARS scored three goals on just five shots in the second period to take a commanding lead to the third.

Adirondack's Michael Ryan would break up Sabourin's shutout bid with a goal at the 3:05 mark of the third, but HERSHEY would tack on two more goals to earn the win. Sheldon Souray, in his return to the lineup Sunday after missing more than a month with a lower body injury, scored his second goal of the season at 6:18. Brian Willsie rounded out the scoring with his 17thof the season at the 12:26 mark. The win for Sabourin was his third in three nights, and his 13th of the season.

Notes: HERSHEY wraps up the current four-game homestand Wednesday night when Kyle Wilson and the Springfield Falcons come to call. Faceoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. Souray played his first game since December 17 at Adirondack, and Tyler Sloan returned to the lineup after missing the last four games. The visit by the Phantoms marked the final time in 2010-11 the club from upstate New York will visit Giant Center. HERSHEY has two games remaining in Glens Falls in the eight-game season series.
