HERSHEY capped off a terrific home weekend Sunday with a 5-1 win over the Adirondack Phantoms. The win gave the BEARS three wins in as many nights at Giant Center, outscoring the opposition in that span 18-5.
The teams slogged their way through a scoreless first period, with the BEARS putting nine shots on goal against Adirondack goaltender Michael Leighton. Dany Sabourin stopped the five that came his way, including a short-handed breakaway attempt by Eric Wellwood.
HERSHEY opened up the floodgates in the second period, scoring three times to take a 3-0 lead into second intermission. Francois Bouchard started the scoring with his second goal in three games at the 2:37 mark, which was quickly followed by Patrick Wellar's second goal in three nights at the 4:48 mark. Andrew Gordon was up next, scoring his 20th goal of the season on a shot low to the ice past Leighton at 12:40. The BEARS scored three goals on just five shots in the second period to take a commanding lead to the third.
Adirondack's Michael Ryan would break up Sabourin's shutout bid with a goal at the 3:05 mark of the third, but HERSHEY would tack on two more goals to earn the win. Sheldon Souray, in his return to the lineup Sunday after missing more than a month with a lower body injury, scored his second goal of the season at 6:18. Brian Willsie rounded out the scoring with his 17thof the season at the 12:26 mark. The win for Sabourin was his third in three nights, and his 13th of the season.
