Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Peoria Rivermen erupted for three unanswered third period goals Sunday afternoon to beat the Lake Erie Monsters 3-1 at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Ben Bishop stopped 29 of 30 shots giving him his 11th win of the year, while Chris Porter and Nick Drazenovic both had a goal and an assist in the contest.
The Rivermen and Monsters played a fast-paced, evenly matched first period but the Rivermen were unable to find the scoreboard for the seventh straight period. The Monsters converted on their third power play of the period with just 29 seconds left. Justin Mercier banked the puck in off defenseman Jake Gannon's skate from the corner, along the goal line. It was Mercier's seventh of the year from Ben Walter and David Van der Gulik.
After being outshot 16-7 in the first period, the Rivermen responded with 13 shots of their own in the second but still could not put one behind Jason Bacashihua.
At 2:36 of the third, Anthony Nigro ended the scoring drought by picking up a rebound, taking it around the back of the net, and finishing with a backhand past acashihua. It was Nigro's sixth of the year and was assisted by Ryan Reaves and Tyler Shattock. It ended the Rivermen scoreless streak at 173:42 dating back to the third period of Tuesday's 5-1 win over Abbotsford.
On the power play, just 1:21 later, Chris Porter netted his fifth of the year. Nick Drazenovic pushed a backhand shot into the pads of Bacashihua. Porter deflected the puck off the stick of the goaltender and it ramped over Bacashihua and into the net. T.J. Hensick earned the secondary assist on the power-play goal which was the first in 18 chances over the last three games.
The Rivermen capped off the scoring at 9:31 when Dave Spina fed Drazenovic from the corner. He made a move to his backhand and slid one under Bacashihua for his 11th of the year.
With the win the Rivermen finished their roadtrip with a record of 2-2-0 and improved to 27-15-2-1 on the year (57 points).
The Rivermen head home for a game against the Rockford IceHogs Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. For tickets call the Rivermen office at (309) 676-1040 or visit www.rivermen.net.
