SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Jan. 23, 2011) ¬" Dane Byers scored twice and David LeNeveu made 23 saves as the Springfield Falcons defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 4-2 at the MassMutual Center in Springfield on Sunday. With the win, Springfield improves to 20-21-1-3. The Sound Tigers fall to 19-20-3-3.
The Sound Tigers were the first to score just 3:36 into the game. After some crisp passing on the power play, Rob Hisey skated into the slot and ripped a shot over David LeNeveu's blocker for his sixth goal of the year to give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead. Springfield countered with a power play goal of its own. Mark Wotton took a hooking penalty, allowing David Savard to score from the point with the man-advantage at 7:53 to knot the score at one. Joel Martin made his second start between the pipes in less than 24 hours, stopping 10 shots in the first period and the game was tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.
The Falcons took a 2-1 lead just 55 seconds into the second period. The Sound Tigers were unable to clear their own zone, leading to an opportunity in front for Tom Sestito. The Springfield forward snapped the puck past Martin and the Falcons had the lead. The Sound Tigers had multiple power play opportunities during the second period, but Springfield would be the only team to convert during a Sound Tigers power play. Mark Katic couldn't hold the bouncing puck in the zone during one of those power plays and the Falcons skated in shorthanded on a two-on-one. Kyle Wilson fed the puck across to Dane Byers, and the =46alcons forward held the puck patiently before shooting it past Martin to give Springfield a 3-1 lead at 13:53 of the second period.
Justin DiBenedetto brought the Sound Tigers to within one-timer in front on Rob Hisey's pass with 2:13 left in regulation. The Sound Tigers had an offensive zone faceoff and pulled Joel Martin for the extra attacker with less than a minute remaining, however Brett Motherwell's cross-ice pass by the blue line was picked off by Byers, who was able to score on the empty net to make it 4-2. The Sound Tigers dictated the pace of play in the third period as Byers empty-netter was Springfield's only shot of the third period, but the Falcons came away with the 4-2 win.
Joel Martin made 17 saves in the loss and drops to 1-2-0 with the Sound Tigers this season. Rob Hisey and Justin DiBenedetto now have goals in back-to-back games.
The Sound Tigers return to action Tuesday night when they host the Albany Devils at 7 p.m.
