Pirates Connect for Shootout Victory

WORCESTER, MA - Mark Mancari netted his second hat trick in as many games to lead the Portland Pirates to a 5-4 shootout victory over the Worcester Sharks in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon in front of 3,407 at the DCU Center.

Dennis Persson also scored for the Pirates in regulation while Corey Tropp and Luke Adam connected in the shootout to give the Pirates their third straight win. Jhonas Enroth stopped all four Sharks opportunities in the shootout to assist in the win as the Pirates upped their record to 27-13-4-1.

Matt Irwin, Nick Schaus, Jay Leach and Andrew Desjardins scored for the Sharks, who rallied for four goals in the third to erase a 3-0 deficit. Worcester suffered their third straight loss and dropped to 20-18-2-6.

The Pirates got off to a quick start as Mancari continued his hot streak giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game. Persson upped the count four-and-a-half minutes later on the power play to send Portland into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead. Mancari scored the only goal of the second, a shorthanded tally, to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead heading into the third. Irwin started the Sharks third period uprising six-and-a-half minutes into the period that saw the home side score four times in 6:39 to take the lead. Schaus, Leach and Desjardins also scored in the rally to give the home side a 4-3 advantage. Mancari completed the hat trick with his equalizer with 28 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

The Sharks out shot the Pirates 36-28 in the game as Enroth posted the victory.

The Pirates will be back in action at the Civic Center on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when the Norfolk Admirals come to town in the final meeting between the two teams this season.
