Abbotsford Heat News Release
WINNIPEG MB ¬" Guillaume Desbiens potted a pair of third period markers to lift the Manitoba Moose to a 5-3 victory over the Abbotsford Heat in Sunday morning action from snowy and frigid Winnipeg.
The Moose opened the scoring early in the first period, repeating their early success from Friday night's contest.
Former Heat Captain Garth Murray gathered in a pass just inside the Heat blue-line and created a partial breakaway down the right side of the Heat zone.
Murray then shovelled a shot towards Heat goalie Leland Irving that skimmed off his right pad and inside the right post.
Murray's first of the season staked the Moose to an early 1-0 lead, which they maintained after the opening 20 minutes.
The Heat answered twice in the opening five minutes of period two.
A Josh Meyers one timer on the Heat power play at 2:23 eliminated the Moose lead and tied the score at 1-1.
Exactly three minutes later on another Heat power play, Jon Rheault pounced on a loose puck out in front of Moose goaltender Tyler Weiman to put the Heat in front 2-1.
However, late in the second, Manitoba responded with two quick goals to retake the lead.
Mark Flood evened the contest with a slap shot thru traffic on a Moose power play at 15:30.
Just 1:16 later, former Heat forward Shawn Weller restored the Moose lead, converting a Mario Bliznak pass and beating Irving high to the blocker.
The two goals restored the Moose lead to 3-2 after two.
In the final frame, the Moose doubled their lead thanks to a fortunate bounce in front of the Heat goal.
Guillaume Desbiens shot on goal ricocheted off both skates of Heat rookie Gaelan Patterson and pinballed by a startled Irving to give the home side a 4-2 lead at 12:25.
Cam Cunning's rebound goal at 14:51 of the third cut the Moose lead back to one at 4-3, but Manitoba's lead held up, as Desbiens corralled a loose puck at centre and deposited the biscuit into the empty net with under a minute to play to wrap up the win for Manitoba.
The Moose victory draws them back to within one point of first place Hamilton in the North Division, while the Heat loss prevents them from jumping to third place in the North Division.
The Heat remains in 5th place in the North, one point back of Toronto and Lake Erie for third place in the division.
Abbotsford will spend the night in Winnipeg before making their way to Texas for a three game swing.
The Heat will next face off against the San Antonio Rampage on Wednesday morning, a rare mid-week morning game in the AHL.
You can catch all of the action on Country 107.1 FM.
Dave Sheldon will have the call of the game at 8:30 AM, with the pregame show kicking off at 8:15 AM, this Wednesday from the home of the Alamo.
