P-Bruins Defeat Pirates in Shootout 4-3

Bridgeport, CT - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 4-3 Saturday evening in a shootout at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The P-Bruins got their goals in regulation from Pascal Pelletier, Byron Bitz and Jeff Hoggan. In the shootout David Krejci, Brett Skinner, Matt Hendricks and Hoggan each scored. The 27-5-2 Atlantic Division leading P-Bruins are back in action Monday at the MassMutual Center against the Springfield Falcons at 1:00 p.m. Providence moves 13 points ahead of the second place Hartford Wolf Pack.

The Pirates scored first at the 5:09 mark of the opening period. Jason King scored off a shot from the top of the slot for his 11th goal of the season. Andrew Ebbett and Joe Callahan recorded the assists. Portland extended its lead to 2-0 at the 7:50 mark, while on the power play. Brendan Mikkelson tallied his third goal of the season on a shot from just inside the blue line. Brandon Segal and Michal Birner picked up the assists. Providence pulled within a goal at the 14:54 mark, while on the power play. Pelletier took a shot from the left boards and Mikkelson dived to block the shot. Instead of blocking it, the puck redirected off his skate and into the net. For Pelletier, it was his league leading 21st goal of the season. Jonathan Sigalet had the lone assist. The P-Bruins went into the first intermission trailing 2-1.

In the second period, Portland wasted no time in taking a 3-1 lead. Just 47 seconds into the period Geoff Platt scored his 15th goal of the season from the left face off circle. Birner grabbed the lone assist. At the 13:37 mark the P-Bruins pulled back within a goal. Jeff Hoggan tried for a wrap around shot and the puck stopped in the crease, right to the side of the right post. Bitz charged at it and poked it into the net. Providence went into the second intermission trailing 3-2.

In the third period the P-Bruins scored the lone goal shorthanded at the 11:39 mark. Pelletier and Hoggan had a 2-on-1 opportunity. Pelletier took the initial shot and Hoggan scored off the rebound. Sean Curry recorded the second assist as the game went into overtime tied at three.

After a scoreless overtime, the first four P-Bruins scored in the shootout, while the only Pirate to tally was Ebbett. Providence went on to the 4-3 shootout victory.

Tuukka Rask stopped 26 of 29 shots for the P-Bruins, while Gerald Coleman made 29 saves for the Pirates. The P-Bruins were 1-for-7 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
