IceHogs Ride Strong Start to Victory over Rivermen
December 29, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
The Rockford IceHogs scored three times in the opening 2:47 of the first period against the Peoria Rivermen en route to a 4-2 win on Saturday night before 4,013 fans at Carver Arena.
Troy Brouwer kicked off the scoring with his team-leading 15th goal of the year just 40 seconds in, followed 40 seconds later by a Derek Nesbitt marker for a 2-0 lead. When Ross Carlson scored his first goal of the year at 2:47 Rivermen starter Chris Beckford-Tseu got the hook after giving up three goals on just seven shots.
After switching to Marek Schwarz in net, Peoria settled down and clawed its way back into the game one goal at a time. Yan Stastny banked a shot in off the left knee of Mike Brodeur at 7:48 from Aaron MacKenzie and Mike Glumac to make it a 3-1 game in the second period.
Julian Talbot's 11th goal of the year came just 1:16 into the final frame and Peoria appeared to have the momentum on its side, but later in the period a five-minute major against Martin Kariya sabotaged any hope the Rivermen had of coming as they would yield a power play goal against to Michael Blunden at 11:50 to set up the 4-2 final.
Schwarz finished with 18 saves on 19 shots, while Brodeur stopped 40-of-42 shots to earn the win for the IceHogs.
Peoria goes right back on the ice tomorrow afternoon in a matinee effort against the Iowa Stars at 3 pm. It's Peoria Journal Star and Insight Cable Family Fun on the Run Day with $1 hot dogs, Cokes, and bags of chips from 2-3 pm, and $1 upper bowl tickets for all kids 12-and-under. There will be inflatables for the kids, face painting, and balloon animals prior to the contest as well.
Tickets for all remaining Rivermen home games are on sale now through the Peoria Civic Center Box Office, through all TicketMaster locations, on line at www.TicketMaster.com, or charge by phone at (309) 676-8700.
