Albany Devils News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Lowell Devils and goaltender Frank Doyle won their third straight game with a 2-0 shutout of the Springfield Falcons on Saturday at the MassMutual Center.
Making his third consecutive start, Doyle stopped all 23 shots he faced to record his teams' first shutout of the season and help Lowell to a season-high three-game winning streak. Matching Doyle's performance for two periods was Falcons goalie Devan Dubnyk, as the first forty minutes saw neither team get on the scoreboard despite five power plays each.
The scoreless tie was finally broken by the Devils at 7:28 of the third period despite a strong offensive series at the time by the Falcons. With his team pinned down in the defensive zone, Nicklas Bergfors was able to force a turnover at the Devils' blueline that sent Benoit Mondou streaking down the ice on the breakaway. He deked twice before shelving a backhander over Dubnyk for his fifth goal of the year.
Lowell added some insurance with 4:03 left in the contest on a 2-on-2 rush by Noah Clarke and Barry Tallackson. As the two players crossed heading into the Springfield zone, Clarke got the two defensemen to commit to him before hitting Tallackson for a wide-open wrist shot that flew inside the near post.
The last time the Devils held the opposition scoreless was April 13 of last season against the Portland Pirates, 2-0. The shutout was the third of Doyle's AHL career, his seventh as a professional and the first since November 26 of 2006 versus the Providence Bruins.
The Devils continue their road trip as they face the Worcester Sharks on Sunday, December 30 at 4:05p.m. and the Portland Pirates on New Year's Eve at 5:35p.m. Listen to all of the action live on 980AM-WCAP as Ryan Johnston brings you all of the play-by-play. Lowell returns home to battle the Falcons on Dollar Dawg Night on Wednesday, January 2 at 7:05p.m. Call the Devils office at (978) 458-PUCK for more information or visit www.lowelldevilshockey.com.
