Otters Win 4-2 in 10 Innings

(EVANSVILLE - IN) --- Catcher Brett Chamberlain hit a two-run 10th inning single and closer Eric Massingham recorded the final outs with the bases loaded for a 4-2 Evansville Otters victory over Southern Illinois on Wednesday night.
Evansville leapt ahead on left-hander Brian Fowler in the first inning, taking the initial lead on an RBI single from first baseman Nick Schwaner.
The advantage only lasted another inning until catcher Sean Coughlin tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.
The game would stay tied at one until the home half of the third inning when Evansville starting pitcher Dan Blewett left with an apparent injury. Pitcher Tyree Hayes then was brought in to the game to throw a season-high 4.2 innings in relief.
Evansville supplied Hayes with more offense as outfielder Nick Colwell hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Southern Illinois would trail 2-1 until the seventh when the Miners would tie the game again. With runners at first and third with no outs, Chad Maddox hit into a double play, scoring fellow outfielder Darian Sandford and evening up the score at two.
Both teams would have chances in the next few innings but the game would stay tied at two into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Southern Illinois turned to their left-handed closer Max Peterson. The Frontier League leader in saves (10) had not allowed an earned run all season long until Chamberlain hit a two-run single past a drawn in infield. The ball traveled to right field and propelled the Otters to a 4-2 lead.
Massinham then entered the game, trying to hold the two-run lead. He struck out the first batter but allowed a single and double to put the tying run at second. After an intentional walk of Coughlin, Massingham struck out center fielder Sean Harrell and induced designated hitter Cannon Lester into a game-ending forceout at second base.
The Evansville Otters have now won three out of their last four games, improving to 12-19 this season. With the loss, the Southern Illinois Miners drop to 18-13.
Neither starting pitcher factored in to the decision. Reliever Patrick Crider (1-1) earns the win, going a hitless 1.1 innings. Peterson (0-1) takes the loss allowing two runs over 1.0 innings. Massingham recorded his sixth save in the victory.
Outfielder Matt Sheely (2-for-5), designated hitter Luis Parache (2-for-4), Nick Schwaner (2-for-5), and catcher Brett Chamberlain (3-for-5) all had multi-hit games in the win.
Evansville will now be going for the series win on Thursday night. Left-hander Matt Crim will be on the mound for the Otters as he will be opposed by righty David Harden. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
