Wild Things Drop 4-3 Nailbiter in Extras

WASHINGTON, Pa - Pittsburgh native David Heck was stu pendous, and finished the evening going 3-for-4 with two RBI's in his debut at CONSOL Energy Park, but it wasn't enough as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, dropped game one of their three game set to the Florence Freedom 4-3 in extra innings.

Starter Casey Barnes atoned for the struggles he endured in his previous outing against the Freedom, giving up just three runs on seven hits and two walks.

Barnes faced some trouble in the fifth, as two runners reached base with two outs but the reigning Frontier League Rookie of the Year dug in and battled out David Harris to avert danger.

The righty was able to keep the potent Florence offense off-balance for much of the evening.

An infield base hit scored the first run of the game for Florence. John Malloy slapped a pitch from Casey Barnes to second baseman Shain Stoner. Stoner dove to his left and made the stop, but had trouble locating the ball as he got to his feet, allowing Malloy narrowly beat the throw to plate Eddie Rodriguez from third.

The Wild Things would not be outdone, and came storming back in the third. Shortstop Michael Mooney doubled down the right field line and one batter later Andrew Heck drove in Mooney with an RBI single just out of the reach of Florence second baseman Pierre LePage.

Florence came back in the seventh, however; with a two-run double by LePage to make the score 3-1.

The Wild Things weren't done, and in the bottom of the eighth they set the table to take the lead.

Coley Crank, in his first game as a Wild Things, started things off with a leadoff single. Mooney then reached first on an error two batters later. A pass-ball put runners at second and third, and in position to even things up with one swing of the bat. Heck continued his productive evening with an RBI groundout to plate Crank, and bring the Wild Things within one.

Washington continued their late inning surge with a leadoff single in the ninth by Rick Devereaux. Devereaux advanced to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Mooney to put the tying run in scoring position. A wild pitch put Devereaux at third and newcomer Coley Crank drove in Devereaux with an infield single to knot things up at three.

Ross Gusky walked in the go-ahead run in the eleventh to close the curtain on the comeback, and seal a 4-3 win for Florence.

Game two will see Gary Lee pitted against Daniel DeSimone. First pitch is set for 7:05 and coverage will begin on the Washington Wild Things flagship station WJPA at 6:55.
