Rascals' Jones Comes Through in a Pinch

River City Rascals News Release
O'Fallon, Mo. - Rookie Kyle Jones delivered a pinch-hit walk-off two-out single after the Rascals blew a three run lead to give River City their first win in the last seven one-run games by a final of 7-6.
The Rascals (18-13) extended their lead to 3-1 in the third inning when Gerardo Avila led off with a homerun, but Gateway (16-15) closed within a run in the fifth but left the bases loaded to end the threat.
River City got the run back in the sixth after a two-out double from Charlie Lisk was followed by a single from Jeremy Synan that extended his league-high hit streak to 20 games. The Rascals plated another run in the sixth after a leadoff walk to Burk. He was pushed around the bases with a sacrifice hit and infield single before Curran Redal picked up a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 lead.
Gateway battled back, scoring a single run in the seventh despite back-to-back leadoff walks in the frame. The first two reached in the eight as well for Gateway before the Rascals went to closer Dustin Umberger. An infield single and sacrifice fly followed by a two-run single that oozed through the left side of the infield led to the first blown save for Umberger and the first inherited runners he had allowed to score this season.
River City went in order in the eighth but Umberger did the same to Gateway in the ninth.
The bottom of the ninth started with two fly outs to center, the second a towering fly that fell short of the center field wall for the second out. Charlie Lisk was hit by a pitch following the deep fly and was attended to at first base with an apparent arm injury but he remained in the game. Synan hit a soft roller up the line that looked to be the end of the rally but the ball was fumbled along the line allowing Lisk to advance to third and Synan to second. After Gateway closer Richard Barrett, a former River City Rascal, fell behind the former Grizzlie Jason Patton, he was intentionally walked to load the bases, bringing in Jones to pinch-hit for Matt Serna. Jones worked the count full, fouled off a couple of tough pitches, and then delivered the walk-off single to center before being mobbed at first base.
River City and Gateway resume their three-game series Thursday night with first pitch set for 7:05. Gateway sends Tim Brown (3-2, 1.81) to the mound against the Rascals' Preston Vancil (1-3, 3.71).
