Game #31 - Home Game #16 (14-16), (6-9)

Last time out.

The Traverse City Beach Bums completed their sweep of the Slammers on Tuesday afternoon at Silver Cross field in a 13-6 blowout. The Bums jumped ahead early and exploded for five runs in the first inning. With one away, Kyle Colligan and Jose Vargas walked, Chase Burch was hit by a pitch, and Jeff Flagg brought two home on a single, followed by a three-run homer by catcher Chris Kay. Joliet trailed 5-0 until the third, but Ben Hewett and Jimmy Waters drew walks to lead off, and Abel Nieves launched a home run, putting the game within two. Shortly thereafter, in the fifth, the Beach Bums went off for another five and batted through the order, courtesy of RBI doubles by Flagg, Kay, and a bases-loaded double by Brian Heere. The Slammers mounted a mini-comeback in the eighth with three runs. With two aboard, Erik Lis and Zach Mandelblatt notched RBI but in the end it was not enough.

For Starters.

Jim Schult is making his second start of the season for Joliet tonight. In his first start he went four innings, giving up five runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three. This is his 12th overall appearance of the season. Schult brings professional experience to the fold as the Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the NYSL Federals. The traveling team struggled but Schult finished the season with 10 starts and his ERA was the best on the team among pitchers with 10 or more starts that season.

From best to.

Just a week ago today, the Slammers had a team ERA of 3.36, the best in the league. They currently have a team ERA of 4.33, the second worst in the league.

Home losing streak.

The Slammers' current four game losing streak at home is their longest of the season. Their longest losing streak of the season overall is four games, which they would match with a loss tonight.

Getting defensive.

The Slammers' defense has become one of the best in the Frontier League. They are tied for second in fielding percentage at .977 and they're tied for the second fewest errors committed (26).

After six.

Joliet is 8-1 when leading after six but they are 1-12 when trailing after six.

I plead the fifth.

Joliet gave up five runs in the fifth inning yesterday, continuing a trend. The Slammers have given up 36 runs in the fifth inning, the most they've surrendered in any frame. Overall, the Slammers have a negative run differential as they've been out-scored 150-127.

More patience.

So far in 2012 the Slammers have walked 114 times, the fourth most in the league. In 2011 they finished with the second fewest walks in the league.

Give me some relief!

In 43.2 IP in May, Joliet's bullpen had an era of 1.88. In 64.2 IP in June, they have a 6.12 ERA.

Error indicator.

The Slammers are 2-12 in games when they make an error. They are 12-4 in games when they do not.

Out-hit.

When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 12-4, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 1-12.

Transaction Wire.

The Slammers traded Catcher Ben Hewett to the River City Rascals for a Player to be Named Later. They released Catcher Tony Sanchez. The Slammers activated Catcher Trey Manz from the 14-Day Disabled List and they signed Catcher Josh Lyon.
