Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL)- The Schaumburg Boomers proved to be comeback kids on Wednesday night at Silver Cross Field, inching out Joliet 5-4 to open the three-game series.
Schaumburg got rolling immediately in the first inning. With one away, Gerard Hall walked, followed by a Frank Pfister single, and Steve McQuail put the Boomers on the board with an RBI single. The Slammers tied it up in the home half when Hector Pellot scored from first base on a single by Erik Lis.
Joliet pulled ahead in the fifth inning, putting runners on second and third with no outs. They quickly capitalized when Lis knocked in his second run, and Pellot scored from third on a wild pitch, putting the score at 3-1.
Just when it looked like the Slammers would break their losing streak, the Boomers pounced in a four-run eighth inning. Hall scored on an error, Sean Mahley came around on a Jereme Milons single, and Nick Kuroczo added another pair, making it 5-3.
Jimmy Waters provided a spark in the bottom of the inning with his first professional home run: a soaring shot far beyond the right field wall and out of the stadium that put the Slammers within one.
Jim Schult made an admirable start for Joliet, tossing six innings on one run, but it was Daniel Carela that gave up the four runs in the eighth and was stuck with the loss.
The Slammers continue the six-game homestand Thursday night at 7:05 against the Western Division-leading Schaumburg Boomers in game two of the series. The first 1000 fans over 21 years old to arrive get a free Budweiser Pint Glass for Thirsty Thursday. Fans can also enjoy $2 beer at the yard. If you can't make it to the game, fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
