Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers saw their five game winning streak come to an end on Monday night, as they fell in their series finale against the Evansville Otters, 7-3 at All Pro Freight Stadium.
The loss for the Crushers (38-31) was their first in six days, and just their third loss at home since the All Star Break, while the victory for the Otters (41-26) gave them a 5-4 edge over the Crushers in the season long series between the two teams. The five-game winning streak was a season high for the Crushers.
Just like the first two games of the series, the lead changed hands multiple times as the two teams went back and forth for the first two innings.
John Schultz homered on the third pitch of the game to give the Otters a 1-0 advantage right away, but Lake Erie answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Trevor Stevens and Andrew Davis stroked back-to-back one out singles, and Hidalgo brought Stevens home on a groundout to tie the game. Juan Sanchez reached on shortstop Cory Urquart's throwing error, which allowed Andrew Davis to score and give Lake Erie their only lead of the night.
The bottom of the Evansville batting order had a huge night, and they went to work in the top of the second. Chris Elder started the inning with a single to right, and made his way to third on a double from Jeremy Nowack. Kolin Conner followed that with a two-run double down the left field line and he scored later in the inning on a two out double from Phillip Wilson.
Lake Erie was able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the second. Craig Hertler belted a two out single, and made his way to second after Stevens walked. Davis followed Stevens with a single to right field, scoring Hertler, which was Lake Erie's last run of the game.
Evansviille tacked on a few more runs, while limiting the Crushers to four hits the rest of the way. Nowack struck again for the Otters in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run homer, his fifth of the season. The Otters added one last run in the ninth inning, as Wilson delivered his second RBI double of the contest.
Preston Olson (6-3) scored the victory for Evansville, after allowing just three runs on six hits and fanning six batters in seven innings of work, while Brandon Shimo (1) scored a two- inning save. Zach Gordon (2-3) took the loss, after allowing six runs on nine hits over five innings of work.
Davis and Ryan Hutchison paced the Crushers with two hits each, both going 2-for-4 on the night. Vince Mejia reached three times, with a pair of walks and a double. Hertler's single in the second inning extended his on base streak to 22 games and his hitting streak to 14.
The Crushers are off on Tuesday, but will begin a three-game series with the Rockford Aviators at Aviators Stadium in Loves Park, Ill., on Wednesday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:05 PM.
