Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The Traverse City Beach Bums jumped out to an early four-run lead but saw the Florence Freedom come from behind to earn an 11-9 win on Monday night at UC Health Stadium.
After a first-inning run from the Freedom, Traverse City responded with five runs in the top of the second. The Beach Bums loaded the bases with one away and took the lead on a two-run single by Scott Woodward. TC added another run on an RBI groundout from Chris Cowell before Greg Harisis plated a run with an RBI single and scored on a double from Jeff DeBlieux to make it 5-1.
Florence scored a run in the last of the second and drew to within one with two more tallies in the last of the fifth against starter Scott Vachon and Rusty Shellhorn. Vachon, making his first professional start, lasted four runs on four hits in 4.2 innings and took a no-decision.
Cowell bumped the Beach Bums lead back to three with a two-run shot in the top of the sixth. It was part of a three-RBI night for Cowell, who now has three homers on the year.
However, the Freedom bounced back in the last of the sixth to retake the lead for good. With two runs already home to cut the lead to 7-6, Florence took advantage of four two-out Beach Bums errors over the span of three straight hitters to score four unearned runs and take a 10-7 lead.
Traverse City got an unearned run in the top of the eighth to close the gap to 10-8, but Rob Kelly homered leading off the last of the eighth to extend the Freedom lead back to three. Jose Vargas pushed his hitting streak to six straight games with a solo homer leading off the ninth, but Ed Kohout struck out the next three batters in order to earn his first professional save.
Shellhorn (4-3) took the loss for the Beach Bums, allowing six runs (two earned) in an inning of relief. Jorge Marban (3-4) earned the winning 1.2 scoreless innings out of the Freedom bullpen.
Traverse City returns home on Wednesday night to start a three-game series against the Frontier Greys. Tanner Tripp (1-5, 4.59) starts for the Beach Bums while the Greys have yet to name a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Coast Guard night and Constitution Night at Wuerfel Park. One lucky fan will win two round trip tickets to Washington, DC courtesy of Passageways Travel and TVC Airport. Those unable to make the game can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
