Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (August 4, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners got a two-run homer in the ninth by Ryan Cavan to close within a run against the River City Rascals, but fell short by a score of 5-4 in losing two of three to the visitors at Rent One Park for only the second time all season long on Monday night.
River City jumped ahead 1-0 without a single hit in the first on starter Jack McGeary (0-1), who was making his Miners debut. They widened their lead to 4-0 in the fifth on a three-run homer by Jon Myers on the final pitch McGeary threw.
The Miners came back with two in the bottom of the inning as after Jon Eisen and Cavan hit back-to-back two out singles, Niko Vasquez extended his hitting streak since he joined the Miners to 12 games with a deep two-run double off the wall in left-center field, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
A solo homer by Steve Carillo, however, on the first pitch he saw in the next half-inning, made it 5-2 and proved to be the winning run. Both bullpens held the other down until with two outs in the ninth, Cavan crushed a homer to deep right to make it 5-4 before Vasquez popped out to end the game.
Cavan enjoyed a 4-for-5 day with two RBIs on his third long ball of the season, but it was not enough as the Miners wrapped up their stretch of 18 games in 18 days with a loss to go 12-6 on the long stretch.
Southern Illinois will now have one day off before hosting the Windy City Thunderbolts on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. to start a three-game series and another long stretch of 12 games in 12 days. Rick Teasley will pitch for the Miners against Windy City's Josh Spence.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
