Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - Right fielder Tirso Ornelas hit his sixth home run of the season, but the TinCaps lost to the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate) on Thursday night at Dow Diamond, 5-1.
The 21-year-old left-handed batter from Mexico pulled a rocket to right field in the top of the fourth inning. However, at that point, Fort Wayne (50-55) already trailed 3-0. Ornelas has 36 extra-base hits on the season, which ties him for seventh most in High-A Central. His homer came against reliever Cole Percival, the son of former MLB All-Star Troy Percival. Ornelas also singled off Loons starter Bobby Miller, who MLB.com rates as the Dodgers' second-best pitching prospect.
Miller, in his return from a 40-day stint on the Injured List, went 2 2/3 innings, allowing just two singles. Meanwhile, Great Lakes (57-48) gave him some early run support. The Loons scored three in the bottom of the first. They added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
The TinCaps out-hit the Loons, 9-7, but went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base.
Gabe Mosser started for the 'Caps, going three innings. Lefty Gabe Morales struck out eight in 3 1/3 innings. Sam Keating pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Center fielder Robert Hassell III, a night after homering three times in a win, was 1-for-3 with a walk. Second baseman Chris Givin joined Ornelas as the only other TinCap with two hits.
