LAST NIGHT: In a game that featured 25 strikeouts, Iowa struck a blow to the Royals playoff hopes, taking the series opener 4-1. John Koronka (9-10) worked 8.0 impressive innings, striking out nine Royals and giving up just one run on five hits and two walks to get the win. Jermaine Van Buren added two more strikeouts in a scoreless 9th inning to earn his 25th save and receive a call-up to Chicago. Royals starter Dennis Tankersle;y (9-8) tied a season high for an Omaha pitcher by fanning eleven batters. But, he also surrendered eleven hits and four runs to take the loss. The Royals lone run came on Chris Truby's 19th home run of the season.
ROYALS REPORT: Matt Diaz, who left last night's game after two innings and was seen leaving the stadium with bags packed, was officially called up to KC today. Diaz hit .371 with 14 home runs and 56 RBI in 65 games for Omaha. To make room for Diaz, KC sent right-hander Jonah Bayliss to Wichita. *** Truby is 4-for-10 over his last three games, emerging from a 3-for-48 (.063) funk over his previous 14 contests. *** Nate Field fired 2.0 scoreless innings of relief last night, extending his scoreless streak to 7.1 stanzas over his last six games. *** Tankersley's eleven K's last night and the 14 whiffs for the staff tied season highs for an Omaha pitcher and the club, set on July 2nd vs. Albuquerque with Chris George recording the first eleven strikeouts in the 2-1 loss. *** Jaime Jones saw his first action last night since going on the DL with a strained quad on July 21. He had a single in three at-bats. Jones has scored nine runs in his last six games, dating back to July 7. *** Chad Santos is hitting at a .356 clip (16-45) over his last dozen games. Despite going 0-for-4 last night, he's still hitting .368 (14-38) in ten starts vs. Iowa. *** Rudy Gomez had two more hits last night. The Royals shortstop is 7-for-his-last-20 (.350), scoring three runs over that six-game span. *** On this home stand, Calvin Pickering is just 7-for-32 (.219), but he has hit three homers and knocked in eight runs. *** Adrian Brown is hitting .204 (10-49) over his last 12 tilts. *** Justin Gemoll has three hits in 26 at-bats (.115) over his last seven games and has grounded into four double plays. *** Jared Price is 3-for-39 (.077) over his past ten starts at home. *** Iowa drilled five doubles last night, all off the bats of right-handed batters who went the opposite way to right field.
STARTERS: RH Jon Leicester (2-7, 5.38) vs. RH Ryan Jensen (1-10, 7.41)
Jensen makes his 17th start for Omaha. The 29-year old right-hander has lost all eight of his starts since being sent down by KC on July 21, posting an 11.45 ERA over that stretch. His last start was a 13-11 loss vs. Oklahoma last Thursday (4.0 IP, 12 H, 10 R- 9 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 HR). This is Jensen's second start vs. Iowa; he lost a 9-3 decision vs. the Cubs on August 15 (6.0 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 5 K). In nine games (three starts) with KC this season, he was 3-2 but had a 7.11 ERA. KC signed Jensen as a minor league free agent last November after he spent the first nine years of his professional career in the Giants' organization. He pitched all of last season with Fresno, going 10-7 with a 5.36 ERA in 30 games (26 starts) and finishing 4th in the PCL in innings pitched (169.2) and 5th in strikeouts (127). He pitched for San Francisco from 2001-2003. In 2002, he went 13-8 for the Giants and had a 4.51 ERA. Jensen was the Giants' 8th round pick in the 1996 draft.
