Oil Kings Winning Streak Up To Three After Win In Moose Jaw

January 10, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Moose Jaw, SK - The future looks very bright for the Edmonton Oil Kings and the present is not so bad either. The Oil Kings have stretched their winning streak to 3 games thanks to a 3 - 1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors. The victory gets them off to a great start for their current 3 game in 3 night stretch and now they're in a 3 way tie for 6th place in the WHL's Eastern Conference.

The great start to the tirp was sparked by a great first period in Moose Jaw. Clayton Cumiskey opened the scoring for the visitors just over 5 and a half minutes into the game. Robin Soudek and Rhett Rachinski picked up the assists on Cumiskey's 8th of the year.

Adrian Van de Mosselaer chipped in with his 4th of the year just 6 and a half minutes later to give the Oil Kings the 2 - 0 lead after the first period despite being outshot 11- 9 in the opening frame.

It stayed that way until 20 year old Ian Duval put the Warriors on the board with 2:45 to go in the second. His team leading 14th of the season made things interesting but Edmonton kept a pretty good streak alive. They've yet to lose when leading after 40 minutes of play. Their record is 12-0-0-0 when they take a lead into the final period now.

The insurance goal came when the Oil Kings first round, 4th overall Bantam pick from this summer Michael St. Croix scored his first WHL goal in his first career game. The 15 year old scoring sensation was making his Oil Kings debut along with fellow 2008 Bantam draft pick Ryan Dech who finished even on the night in the plus/minus department.

The other big story of the game was the penalty kill for Edmonton. They killed off all 8 Warrior powerplays. Moose Jaw was definitely missing their top scorer Joel Broda who was just traded to the Calgary Hitmen earlier this week.

Torrie Jung made 25 saves in the win and Edmonton's record improves to 19-20-24. The Oil Kings are currently tied with Kootenay and Prince Albert who all have 44 points in the standings. Next up on this grueling road trip will be the Brandon Wheat Kings Saturday night. Game time is 6:30 Edmonton time.
