Oil Kings Fall in Overtime to Hitmen

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (2-1-1-0) dropped a tight-checking 2-1 overtime affair to the Calgary Hitmen (1-2-0-0) on Friday night at the Downtown Community Arena.

Neither team was able to breakthrough in the opening 20 minutes of play that saw the Hitmen outshoot the Oil Kings by a 13-9 margin.  The best chance of the period came in the late stages after Jacob Boucher set Carter Souch up for a backdoor opportunity, but the Edmonton forward put the finishing touches just off the mark.

The Oil Kings got on the board first during a penalty filled middle stanza that saw the team head to the man-advantage seven times.  With 9:11 left to go in the period, Tyler Horstmann jumped onto a loose puck in the high-slot and zipped it past Hitmen goaltender Brayden Peters for the power play ice-breaker, the goal was his second if the pre-season.

The Hitmen got the game even late in the second period during a rare sequence of five-on-five hockey after David Adaszynski shoveled home the puck during a goal mouth scramble at the 17:28 mark.

In the third period, both teams would trade chances throughout and in the dying moments, the Hitmen got two high quality chances that Oil Kings netminder Kolby Hay would snuff out; first a highlight-reel glove save off Hitmen forward Mason Finley from in tight, followed up with a butt-end save off a hot-shot from Edmonton native Riley Fiddler-Schultz from the right-wing circle to preserve the single-point for his team.

In overtime, Tristan Zandee put the game on ice for Calgary after capitalizing on an odd-man rush thanks to a nifty setup from Zac Funk.

Kolby Hay finished the night making 27 saves on 29 Hitmen shots, while Peters turned away 27 of the 28 shots thrown his way.  The Oil Kings were 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Hitmen went 0-for-2.

The Oil Kings wrap up their preseason schedule tomorrow night in Calgary when they once again battle the Hitmen at 7:00 P.M.

With his second period assist, D Keagan Slaney now has five points (0G, 5A) in four pre-season games.

The Oil Kings were without F Jake Neighbours (STL), F Dylan Guenther (ARI), F Carson Latimer (OTT), F Jakub Demek (VGS), F Jalen Luypen (CHI), F Josh Williams (PIT), D Simon Kubicek (EDM) and G Sebastian Cossa (DET) as they are all currently attending NHL training camps.

D Blake Heward and D Eric Johnston jumped up to play forward for the night.
