MAPLE RIDGE, BC- The Prince George Cougars (1-2-0-0) fell 3-1 to the Vancouver Giants (1-0-1-0) in WHL Pre-Season action Friday night in Maple Ridge.
Friday was a chippy, penalty filled affair as the two teams combined for 14 power-plays and the game also featured a line brawl late in the third period.
Riley Heidt scored the Cougars' lone goal, on a five-on-three power-play, early in the second period. Taylor Gauthier was sharp in his Pre-Season debut, as he kicked out 26 of 28 shots.
Payton Mount scored all three of Vancouver's goals. His first two came on the power-play in the first three-minutes of the first period. His third was into an empty net in the final minute of regulation. Will Gurski earned the win in net for the Giants, as he stopped 29 of 30 shots.
Tempers flared late in the third period, as the two teams were involved in line brawl inside the final minute. Keaton Dowhaniuk, Jaren Brinson, Connor Bowie and Mitch Kohner were all assessed fighting majors for Prince George.
The Cougars conclude their 2021 Pre-Season schedule tomorrow on Vancouver Island against the Victoria Royals (0-2-0-0); the puck drops at 7:05 pm.
