Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Calgary, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped the first half of this weekend's home-and-home set with the Calgary Hitmen by a 6-1 score at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday night.

A specialty team dominated first period would prove advantageous for the home side as the Hitmen raced out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play thanks to three power play goals.

Ben Kindel got the game's icebreaker as he was able to wire in a shot from the right faceoff dot just 2:53 into the game. With seven minutes left in the period, the Hitmen added to their lead after Oliver Tulk blasted home a one timer from the left-circle of the Edmonton zone. Carson Wetsch tacked on the third power play tally for the Hitmen with just under two minutes left in the frame as he sprinted into the right-circle of the Edmonton zone and beat Oil Kings starting goaltender Logan Cunningham with a hard-low shot.

The Oil Kings had three power plays of their own in the period but were unable to capitalize.

In the second period, the Oil Kings would carry the play for much of the period, outshooting the Hitmen 14-9 and at the 13:42 mark they would finally breakthrough on Hitmen netminder Ethan Buenaventura.

On an Edmonton power play, Cole Miller feathered a perfect cross-ice pass to Rilen Kovacevic in the right-circle where he would load up and laser a wristshot short-side and into the top shelf of the Calgary net for his team leading 10th goal of the season, and fifth in his last six games.

Before the period was out though, the Hitmen were able to restore their three-goal lead after Carter Yakemchuk fired in a pointshot through a maze of bodies in front of Cunningham.

In the third period, the Hitmen would tack on two more goals with Tulk tallying his second of the night and Dax Williams finishing the scoring with just under five minutes left in the game.

Cunnginham finished the night making 42 saves for the Oil Kings, while Buenaventura turned in 36 for the Hitmen. Edmonton went 1-for-7 on the power play, Calgary was 3-for-6.

Next up, the Oil Kings and Hitmen go at it again tomorrow night at Rogers Place with puck drop slated for 7:00 P.M.

The Edmonton Oil Kings next home game is Saturday, November 11 at 7:00 P.M. when they welcome the Calgary Hitmen to Rogers Place.
