Wheat Kings Explode Offensively in Win over Regina

November 11, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

The very first game of the season, the Brandon Wheat Kings and Regina Pats played an all-offense, high-scoring barn burner of a game that ended with 13 combined goals. They very nearly repeated the feet on Saturday, November 11.

Brett Hyland, Roger McQueen, and Rylen Roermsa scored twice each, while Caleb Hadland added one of his own in a 7-5 Wheat Kings win. Five different Pats scored in reply, with Tanner Howe providing the last of their tallies.

"We gave them some opportunities we shouldn't have and they capitalized on it," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "But again I think we did a good job of showing character and coming from behind and ultimately wrapping it up tonight."

The goals came fast and furious, and the first period was no exception. Off the rush, Roersma took a pass from Nate Danielson and sniped home his sixth of the campaign. Before the period was out, however, defensemen Keegan Slaney and Parker Berge had staked Regina to a 2-1 lead, with Slaney banging away off a goalmouth scramble and Berge drifting in from the point and snapping one home as he lost himself in coverage.

A shorthanded goal by Jaxsin Vaughan on a breakaway was followed swiftly by Hyland cashing a rebound on another power play. Just 31 seconds later, however, Zackary Shantz forced a turnover in the slot and snapped one home to restore the two-goal lead.

The next four goals of the game would belong to the Wheat Kings, however. Hadland took a drop pass from Danielson off the rush and bounced a shot off a skate to make it 4-3. Then, McQueen took a slick cross-seam feed from Dominik Petr to make it a 4-4 tie.

"I've never had a more wide open net in my life," McQueen said. "I was expecting that from him (Petr), he's been passing that way all year. He's the smartest guy I think I've ever played with."

McQueen and Petr weren't done connecting either, as McQueen, poised on the right post during a Wheat King power play, took a perfect pass from Petr to make it 5-4. On another Wheat King power play, Hyland found a loose puck first after a shot strangely bounced off the trapper of Kelton Pyne, and stuffed it home.

Howe made it interesting late, but for the first time since Evan Groening hit the empty net in Tri City, the Wheat Kings got some breathing room as McQueen unselfishly passed to Roersma, who sealed the deal with an empty netter.

The rematch comes immediately as the Wheat Kings travel to Regina to face the Pats for a Sunday afternoon showdown.
