Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
JOLIET, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums had four players drive in two or more runs led by a career-high four RBI from Chris Kay as the Beach Bums won their fifth game in a row, completing a sweep of the Joliet Slammers with a 13-6 win on Tuesday morning.
The Beach Bums started the game with a bang as with one out, Traverse City loaded the bases on walks to Kyle Colligan and Jose Vargas before Chase Burch was hit by a pitch. Jeff Flagg came to the plate next and delivered his first hit with the sacks packed this season, a single to right to score Colligan and Vargas for a 2-0 lead. Chris Kay was the ensuing hitter and on a 1-1 offering from Tommy Mendoza, deposited his fourth homerun of the season over the leftfield fence for a 5-0 Traverse City lead.
Joliet would get back into the game with three runs in the bottom of the third inning when Abel Nieves hit a three-run long ball following a pair of walks to cut the TC lead to 5-3.
Traverse City would get the runs back and then some in the fifth as Vargas was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and then stole second. Two batters later, Flagg doubled to bring home Vargas to make the score 6-3. Following Flagg, Kay chipped in his second hit of the day, a double to score Flagg and make it 7-3. The offense wasn't near done in the inning yet, however, as walks to Kyle Eveland and Ryan Still loaded the bases for Brian Heere who cleared the bags with a double to put the Beach Bums up 10-3.
TC would score a run in the seventh and tack on two in the ninth while Joliet plated three in the eighth to create the final score.
David Deminsky (3-1) earned the win with 4.2 innings of fantastic relief. After allowing a double to Hector Pellot in the first batter he faced, Deminsky downed the next 14 slammers batters in order to pick up the win. Tommy Mendoza (3-2) took the loss for Joliet
Traverse City now makes the short trip over I-80 to Crestwood, IL where they will take on the Windy City ThunderBolts in a three-game series. On Wednesday, Brooks Belter (2-0, 3.55) will get the start for the Beach Bums against Donovan Drake (1-0, 1.64) for Windy City. Coverage on Sunny Country 101.9 will begin at 7:45 p.m. outside of an 8:05 first pitch.
