Normal CornBelters News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up one big inning to prevent them from sweeping Southern Illinois, losing to the Miners 6-3 on Tuesday night at Rent One Park.
The CornBelters struck quickly for a pair of runs in the first inning. Daniel Cayton led off with an infield single and moved to second when Ty Wiesemeyer reached on an error on his sacrifice attempt. Both moved to second and third on a sacrifice, and scored on RBI singles from Robert Brooks and Steven Felix.
The Belters added a run in the fourth when Sam Judah hit a two-out double off the right-center wall, moved to third on a base hit by Chico Gomez and scored on the first professional hit by Matt Mirabal to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Miners took the lead in the fifth with six runs as they batted around. Southern Illinois led off the fifth on three straight one-out singles, with the RBI delivered by Jake Kaase to cut the Normal lead to 3-1. While attempting to walk Matt Fields to load the bases, CornBelters pitcher Jacob Liedka balked to send another run home to put the Miners within a run at 3-2. A walk loaded the bases, and Will Block hit a grand slam home run inside the left-field pole to give the Miners a 6-3 lead.
Jacob Liedka (1-2) took his first loss as a CornBelters starter. Darren Tew (1-0) earned his first decision as a starter for Southern Illinois, while Max Peterson pitched a perfect ninth for his tenth save.
The CornBelters return home on Wednesday for a three-game series against the Rockford RiverHawks. Game time is 6:30 each night. Wednesday's starting pitchers are left-hander Tyler Stovall (1-4, 6.65 ERA) for Normal against Rockford's right-hander Cody Hallahan (1-2, 5.33 ERA). Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 6:20.
