
Miners Avoid Sweep by CornBelters

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners avoided the sweep tonight against the Normal CornBelters as they won the game 6-3. With the win, the Miners improve to 18-12 on the season, two games behind Traverse City in the Eastern Division. Miners starter Darrin Tew pitched six solid innings as he allowed seven hits, gave up three runs, two earned and struck out five batters to earn his first victory of the season.
The CornBelters jumped out to an early lead off Miners starter Darrin Tew in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. CornBelters first baseman Robert Brooks and right fielder Steven Felix had RBI singles. The CornBelters scored another run in the top of the fourth inning as catcher Mike Mirabal hit a two out single to bring in left fielder Sam Judah to take a 3-0 lead.
The Miners came storming back in the bottom of the fifth inning off CornBelters starter Jacob Liedka as they scored six runs to take a 6-3 lead. Jake Kaase had a one out single for a RBI. Darian Sandford scored on a balk by Liedka and Will Block hit a grand slam to cap off the inning. The Miners would go on and win the game 6-3, as Max Peterson struck out two batters in the top of the ninth to earn his tenth save of the season.
Ryan Quigley and Albert Ayala each tossed a scoreless inning. The Miners (18-12) will welcome in the Evansville Otters (11-19) for a three game set. LHP Brian Fowler (3-1) will be opposed by Otters starter Dan Blewett (2-1). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Rent One Park.
