OF Shin-Soo Choo Joins Aeros

July 19, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

The Aeros announced another roster move today as the team received OF Shin-Soo Choo on a Major League rehab assignment.

Choo is a native of Pusan, South Korea and landed on the 15-day MLB disabled list retroactive to July 3rd with a right thumb sprain suffered at Progressive Field. He has not appeared in a game since and this will be his only currently scheduled location for his rehab assignment. The 28-year-old right fielder was batting .286 in 78 games for the Cleveland Indians thus far this season, leading the team with 86 hits, 13 home runs, 43 RBI, 143 total bases, 48 walks and 12 stolen bases. The Indians originally acquired Choo in a trade with the Seattle Mariners on July 26th, 2006 and he has yet to appear in a game at Canal Park in his career. He owns a .298 career batting average in 379 games for Cleveland and last year became the first Asian-born player in MLB history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in the same season.

Choo will be wearing #40 and joins fellow Cleveland teammate Asdrubal Cabrera on the Akron roster. Major League rehab assignments do not affect minor league rosters, and the Aeros roster currently stands at the full 24 men + 2 on rehab assignments + 1 on the disabled list. As a separate note, the recently acquired RHP Rob Bryson will now be wearing #39.

The Aeros host the first-place Altoona Curve tonight at 7:05 p.m. for the beginning of a three-game series on Dollar Dog Monday at Canal Park. Both Choo and Cabrera are expected to be starting on "Ship out LeBron James" night where fans can make charitable donations of their LeBron apparel in exchange for free tickets to the game.
