July 19, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Manchester, NH) ---The Fisher Cats used five pitchers to strike out 12 Sea Dogs batters, but New Hampshire fell to Portland 11-2 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Monday night in front of 6,258. Adam Loewen and Travis Snider collected multiple hits to lead the offense on Christmas in July Night at the ballpark.

After a 2:04 rain delay, both starting pitchers had trouble with their control, but minimized the damage early. Losing pitcher Randy Boone loaded the bases with no-outs in the top of the first, and almost got out of the jam, but hit Ryan Lavarnway on a pitch with two outs to hand Portland the 1-0 advantage.

Sea Dogs starter Kyle Weiland gave up a two-out single to David Cooper, followed by two hit batsmen---Loewen (2 for 3) and Jonathan Diaz to load the bases in the home-half of the second. Weiland, however, got out of the inning unscathed by via a strikeout.

The Fisher Cats (57-39) took advantage of the wildness in the bottom of the fourth. Eric Thames tied the game at 1-1 after reaching on Weiland's third hit by pitch, and scoring all the way from first on a Loewen RBI double to the deep left-center gap.

The only other Fisher Cats run came in the bottom of the seventh when Snider (2 for 4) doubled, and was brought home on a single off the bat of Shawn Bowman.

Portland (47-48) took the lead for good in the top of the fifth with lots of help from the Fisher Cats pitching staff. Boone (2-5, 4.08) loaded the bases on walks before giving way to reliever Adrian Martin, who proceeded to walk in a run, and hit a batter to give Portland the 3-1 lead without recording a hit so far in the frame. Jorge Padron and Ryan Khoury then got the bat off their shoulders with a single and double, respectively, to widen the gap to 6-1, and drive Martin out of the game. Danny Farquhar then got his shot at the Sea Dogs, but relinquished a single and a wild pitch to allow two inherited runners to score and give Portland the 8-1 cushion.

The Sea Dogs relentless attack continued in the seventh off of the Fisher Cats fourth pitcher of the night. Vince Bongiovanni allowed three runs on three hits, a walk and another hits batsman for a Portland 11-1 lead.

Weiland (5-5, 4.12) recorded the victory for Portland, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing one run, while scattering fives hits and striking out seven.

The Fisher Cats will host the Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, in the middle game of a three-game set Tuesday at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. New Hampshire right-hander Rey Gonzalez (1-1, 5.40) will face off against Portland's right-handed counterpart in Jeremy Kehrt (1-7, 5.29). Fisher Cats Pre Game begins at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.
