Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Trenton Thunder got six one-hit innings from right-hander Lance Pendleton as they cruised past the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 6-0, in front of 4,086 at The Diamond on Monday night.
Squirrels' right-hander Michael Main found trouble for the first time in the third inning when he hit the lead-off batter Edwar Gonzalez. Gonzalez stole second base and advanced to third on a wild-pitch from Main. Austin Romine gave Trenton a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Thunder doubled the lead with an unearned run against Main in the fourth. Main threw away a comebacker from Matt Cusick allowing him to reach with one out. A batter later, Jack Rye tripled him home off the top of the wall in right field for a 2-0 advantage.
Trenton stretched the lead to four runs and chased Main in the fifth. Justin Snyder laid down a bunt-single to spark the rally, and scored on a double from Romine. Brandon Laird singled Romine to third and he scored for a 4-0 edge when Daniel Brewer lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.
Main (0-2) was tagged with the loss over 4 1/3 innings. He allowed four runs - three earned - on four hits. He walked two, committed two throwing errors and struck out two as he dropped his second consecutive decision.
Meanwhile, Pendleton (8-4) was magnificent over his six innings. He blanked the Squirrels on just one hit. He did walk four, but struck out five as he won for the eighth time.
The Thunder put the game away with a pair of runs off of right-hander Mike MacDonald in the top of the ninth inning. Wilkins Arias, George Kontos and Ryan Pope combined for three scoreless innings out of the Trenton bullpen to complete the shutout.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 on Tuesday night at The Diamond. RHP Felix Romero (2-1, 3.88) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Hector Noesi (6-1, 1.74) for Trenton.
