Aeros Name Kipnis Player of the Week Again

July 19, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - The Akron Aeros honored second baseman Jason Kipnis Monday morning as the recipient of the Akron Aeros Player of the Week award for the second time this season. The recognition covers the week of July 12th through July 18th where the Aeros played only five contests because of the Eastern League All-Star Break. All five games were against the last-place Erie SeaWolves and Kipnis was instrumental in helping Akron sweep the Wolves in four games over the past weekend.

Kipnis again led the team with a .476 (10-for-21) batting average this past week in his five games while also drawing three walks. He doubled three times and scored six runs while stealing three of his only four stolen bases in Double-A this season. The Northbrook, IL native went hitless Monday but responded with four consecutive multi-hit games against Erie including two singles and three walks in Friday night's victory.

He earned the promotion to the Aeros back on June 10th and since that time, the 23-year-old ranks seventh in the Eastern League with a .404 on-base percentage. He now is batting .320 in Double-A along with 10 doubles and 12 RBI, reaching base safely in all but two of his 32 appearances. Canal Park has also marked great success for the second baseman, as he is batting .349 with a .446 on-base percentage in 16 games in Akron.

The Cleveland Indians selected Kipnis out of Arizona State University in the second round of the June 2009 Draft and he made his professional debut last August with short-season Class A Mahoning Valley. He appeared in 29 games for the Scrappers, batting .306 with 19 RBI. Kipnis then began the 2010 season with the Class A Kinston and was converted from his old position in the outfield to second base. He batted .308 in 46 games played for the K-Tribe, and now has 12 home runs and 47 RBI combined on the year.

The Akron Aeros will award their Player of the Week honor to an individual player every Monday for the rest of the season. In the case of a Monday closure of the team offices, the Aeros will announce the award Tuesday morning in conjunction with the announcement of the weekly Eastern League honors. Kipnis previously won the first-ever award on June 21st. This week, the separate EL Player-Pitcher of the Week Awards went to Harrisburg's Jesus Valdez and New Hampshire's Jo-Jo Reyes, respectively.

Cleveland Indians stars Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin-Soo Choo will both join Akron as the team continues a weeklong home stand Monday against the first-place Altoona Curve. Both players are currently recovering from injuries, and tonight is the much-anticipated "Ship out LeBron James" night at Canal Park. Fans make charitable donations of gently used LeBron apparel in exchange for free tickets to the game and all donations will go to the Canal District Union of the United Methodist Church for an upcoming mission trip.

The series against the Curve begins tonight at 7:05 p.m. on another Dollar Dog Monday at Canal Park. Akron ace Alex White (4-4, 1.53 ERA), the recipient of last week's Akron Aeros Player of the Week, makes the start against Altoona left-hander Rudy Owens (8-3, 3.00 ERA). Tonight's radio broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on Fox Sports 1350 AM and at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
