Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, OH - Cleveland Indians' 2009 first round draft choice Alex White tossed seven solid innings and struck out seven Curve hitters as the Akron Aeros were able to fly past Altoona 4-1 in the first game of a three-game set on Monday night at Canal Park.
Curve lefty Rudy Owens would be strung with his first loss since June 10 after allowing three runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings of work. Owens struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Owens permitted a run in the first inning after a pair of two out singles, with the second one by Matt McBride scoring Lonnie Chisenhall to put Akron in front 1-0 early.
The Aeros would tack on another run in the top of the fourth when McBride, who finished the night 3-for-4, belted a solo home run off of Owens to put Akron up 2-0. McBride was a triple shy of the cycle.
Altoona (57-37) would score their only run of the game after a pair of two out singles by Miles Durham and Anthony Norman gave the Curve a first-and-third situation. Durham would score when White uncorked a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
Akron would put the game away when Asdrubal Cabrera, who along with Shin-Soo Choo was playing in Monday's game as part of a MLB rehab with Cleveland would belt a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the fifth and give the Aeros a 3-1 lead. They would seal the deal the very next inning when Jerad Head belted a solo bomb to lead off the inning off of reliever Michael Dubee. Owens and Dubee allowed three solo home runs in successive innings - the fourth, fifth and sixth - to the leadoff batter.
The Curve will look to grab the second game of the three-game set on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jared Hughes (10-6, 4.46) will toe the rubber for the Curve in search of his league-leading 11th win of the season. Opposing for Akron (50-45) will be southpaw Kelvin de la Cruz (2-5, 5.28). Air time on flagship radio station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Altoona Curve Radio Network is 6:35 p.m.
