Eastern League Announces Weekly Award Winners

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending July 18th:

Harrisburg Senators outfielder Jesus Valdez has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending July 18th. The 25-year old played in five games for the Senators last week and batted .409 (9-for-22) with four doubles, two home runs, 12 RBI, eight runs scored, one walk and a .864 slugging percentage. Valdez, who is a native of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, had at least one hit in all five games he played in last week and drove in multiple runs in three of those games, including a 3-for-5 performance with two home runs, six RBI and two runs scored in a 9-7 win against Altoona on Thursday night at Metro Bank Park. Valdez added another impressive performance on Saturday night in an 18-15 loss against Altoona, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, four runs scored and three RBI. The 6'2", 170 lb. slugger ranked among the league leaders in virtually every offensive category last week, including leading all Eastern League players in RBI (12), runs scored (8), extra-base hits (6) and total bases (19). He also finished tied for first in doubles (4) and tied for third in hits (9). Jesus, who is batting .270 with 23 doubles, seven home runs, 45 RBI and 37 runs scored in 93 games for the Senators this season, was signed by the Washington Nationals on January 5, 2008.

Jo-Jo Reyes, a left-handed starting pitcher for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 18th. The 6'2", 230 lb. hurler made one start for the Fisher Cats last week and had a record of 1-0 with six strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. The 25-year old made his only appearance of the week on Friday night at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium against the visiting Binghamton Mets and allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out six batters in eight scoreless innings to lead the Fisher Cats to a 6-2 victory. Reyes carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the B-Mets before allowing a one-out double to Jonathan Malo. Prior to joining the Fisher Cats, the West Covina, California resident, appeared in 12 games for the Gwinnett Braves of the Triple-A International League and posted a record of 1-5 with 50 strikeouts and a 5.70 ERA over 47.1 innings of work. Jo-Jo, who has a record of 5-15 with a 6.40 ERA during parts of four seasons with the Atlanta Braves, was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade with Atlanta on July 14, 2010. He was originally selected by the Braves in the second round of the 2003 draft out of Riverside Poly High School in California.
