Providence Bruins News Release
HERSHEY, P.A. - The Providence Bruins hit three posts and outshot the Hershey Bears 15-3 during the third period, but Jimmy O'Brien scored in overtime to hand the Bears a 5-4 victory at the GIANT Center on Sunday evening.
The first period featured 20 shots, a dozen of them for the Bears, though Providence held two separate leads. The P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead at 12:12, when Alexander Khokhlachev streaked into the zone on the left wing side. Seth Griffith was trailing him, but he was hit into the right post as Khokhlachev's shot beat Philipp Grubauer. Instead of a penalty being charged, the referees allowed the goal to stand.
1:37 later, Garrett Mitchell slapped a game-tying bid past Malcolm Subban from the top of the slot. Only 0:27 after allowing the goal, Providence re-took the lead. Ben Sexton led a 3-on-1 into the zone and ripped the puck past Grubauer to take the momentum back.
The Bears had a three-goal outburst in the second period and took a 4-2 advantage into the last minute of the frame. Joel Broda (3:30), Chris Brown (7:05) and Dustin Gazley (16:40) all lit the lamp. Khokhlachev notched his second goal in as many periods at 19:14. That pulled Providence back within one heading into the dressing room for a second time.
Rob Flick knotted the game up at four apiece with a shot near the right wing corner that rolled off of Grubauer and in at 7:30 of the third. Ben Sexton committed an interference minor late, but Hershey was unable to capitalize. (Providence was 0-for-2 on the power play, but 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.) The Bruins had a good chance late on the kill, but Connor Carrick dove to block a pass in the slot during the Providence shorthanded 2-on-1 bid.
With 3:51 left in overtime, O'Brien received a pass from Stan Galiev that created a breakaway. His backhand in front beat Subban and gave the Bears the extra point.
The Bruins will have a pair of games in Norfolk next weekend versus the Admirals to wrap up the road trip. The first game is on Friday at 7:30pm.
