St. John's IceCaps News Release

Scott Kosmachuk and JC Lipon each had two points as the St. John's IceCaps defeated the Portland Pirates 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, ME.

Jussi Olkinuora made 24 saves for the IceCaps while Chase Balisy added a pair of helpers.

Just 39 seconds in, the IceCaps got on the board on Lipon's second of the season after defenceman Julien Brouillette wound up and blasted a slap shot that was tipped by Lipon past Louis Domingue in the Portland goal.

St. John's added to its lead early in the second. After dumping the puck down low to Balisy, Brassard headed straight to the net and took a great feed from John Albert before snapping a shot past Domingue to make it 2-0.

Julian Melchiori picked up his first goal of the season at 12:07 of the second when he joined the rush and took a feed from Kosmachuk, firing a shot past Domingue to end the Pirates goaltender's night early.

Late in the second on a five-on-three advantage, O'Neill notched his 10th of the season with assists to Brenden Kichton and Balisy to give the IceCaps a commanding 4-0 lead through two periods.

Brendan Shinnimin cut the deficit to three at 1:57 of the third as he cut back and fired a wrister past Olkinuora, then midway through the period Jordan Szwarz scored on a Portland power play to make it a 4-2 game. Just 35 seconds later however, the IceCaps restored the three-goal lead on Kosmachuk's 11th after he got a fortunate bounce off his skate on a feed from Lipon.
