Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, Me. - The Portland Pirates (28-22-3-0) were brought down by the St. John's IceCaps by a tally of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. It was a tough Atlantic Division loss for the Pirates who are currently in fourth place, two points behind the Providence Bruins. It was the sixth matchup of the Eimskip Port-to-Port Challenge, and the seventh overall meeting of these two teams this season.

The IceCaps got the ball rolling early with a goal just 39 seconds into the game from JC Lipon, assisted by Julien Brouilette and Keaton Ellerby. The first frame was also filled with a slew of cross-checking, hooking, and roughing penalties for both sides.

St. John's had another early goal in the second period, this time at 2:24 scored by Austen Brassard and assisted by John Albert and Chase Balisy. Their second of the period came at 12:07 by Julian Melchiori and assisted by Scott Kosmachuk. The two teams had a scrum at 19:17, leading to Portland's Phil Lane and St. John's' Melchiori dropping the mitts for a fight. Pirates penalties were also called on Brendan Shinnimin for roughing, and Justin Hache for boarding, resulting in a 5-on-3 power play for the IceCaps. Less than 20 seconds later, at 19:41, the IceCaps converted when Will O'Neill scored, assisted by Brenden Kichton and Balisy.

The Pirates opened up the final period with an early goal of their own when Brendan Shinnimin scored at 1:57, assisted by Henrik and Philip Samuelsson. The Pirates found the back of the net again at 10:22 on a Jordan Szwarz power-play goal, assisted by Justin Hodgman and Philip Samuelsson. The IceCaps rebutted a little more than 30 seconds later when Kosmachuk scored, assisted by Lipon and goalie Jussi Olkinuora.

The IceCaps and Pirates will face off again on Wednesday at the Cross Insurance Arena at 7 p.m. The Pirates will then host the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday, February 28, at 7 p.m. for Pink in the Rink Night presented by TD Bank. For tickets and more information, call 207-PIRATES.
